Who We Are

The Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn Center supports explorations into the life and writings of the Nobel Laureate and Russian writer and historian Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. We also host the official English-language site for Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn. We strive to advance the legacy of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn in the English-speaking world through the promotion of a better understanding of his life, thought, and works. We gratefully acknowledge Theresa Khuri for her founding inspiration.

 
 

Ignat Solzhenitsyn, President


Enjoying an active career as both conductor and pianist, Ignat Solzhenitsyn has appeared with numerous major orchestras, including those of Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Saint Louis, Los Angeles, Montreal, Toronto, London, Paris, St. Petersburg, Israel and Sydney, collaborated with such distinguished conductors as Blomstedt, Dutoit, Gergiev, Previn, Rostropovich, Sawallisch and Temirkanov, and partnered with such top soloists as Goode, Graffman, Isserlis, McNair, Ohlsson, and Uchida. A winner of the Avery Fisher Career Grant, Ignat Solzhenitsyn is Conductor Laureate of the Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia and serves on the faculty of the Curtis Institute of Music.

Daniel J. Mahoney, Vice-President & Chief Academic Officer


Daniel J. Mahoney is the author of works on Raymond Aron, Charles de Gaulle, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Bertrand de Jouvenel, Pierre Manent, and Roger Scruton, and has edited or co-edited many books, including The Solzhenitsyn Reader. His books Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn: The Ascent from Ideology (2001) and The Other Solzhenitsyn: Telling the Truth About a Misunderstood Writer and Thinker (2014) have appeared in French and Romanian translations. He held the Augustine Chair in Distinguished Scholarship at Assumption College (now University), where he taught from 1986 until 2021 . He is presently a Senior Fellow at the Claremont Institute. Mahoney’s essays, articles, and reviews have appeared in a wide range of popular and scholarly publications, including The Wall Street Journal, First Things, The Claremont Review of Books, Commentaire, The Hungarian Review, The New Criterion, Quadrant, Perspectives on Political Science, and National Review. In 1999, he was awarded the Prix Raymond Aron. In 2023 he received the Palouci Prize for his book, The Statesman as Thinker: Portraits of Greatness, Courage, and Moderation. He lives in Clinton, Massachusetts.

Stephan Solzhenitsyn, Executive Director


Born in 1973 in Moscow, Stephan Solzhenitsyn lived in the West from the moment of Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s 1974 expulsion until 2004, when he returned to live in Russia. He has participated in a number of his father’s projects and publications and is a board member of the Russian Social Fund and the Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn Center. While in the USA, he received his education in environmental studies and city planning. He holds a master’s degree from MIT and a bachelor’s degree from Harvard. Stephan’s professional work in the USA spanned the energy, real estate and transport sectors. He conducted and managed environmental impact studies and licensing / permitting procedures. In Russia, he has focused mainly on electric power generation, district heating, greenhouse gas emission abatement and related industries.
